A Letter From Dr. West
Much information is available on what is referred to as the different "schools" of Feng Shui. Many practitioners will state that they practice Form School, or East West School, meaning they base their readings on one particular aspect of an analysis. The various schools are not different interpretations of Feng Shui but rather different levels or layers of interpretation. Obviously different situations present opportunities to utilize different techniques but to have a total and accurate Feng Shui analysis the practitioner must have a comprehensive understanding of the various layers which form a complete Feng Shui Analysis.
For example, the most basic as well as the most advanced "school" of Feng Shui is the study of the Form. It is the most obvious because it is our physical environment, the world we live in. It is easy to see how a mountain or body of water can directly affect a person or area. It is also the most advanced because one can calculate many other variables, however ignore the form and the analysis will not be complete or accurate. The form controls the potential of energy in an area.
East-West Feng Shui analyzes the sub conscious effects of environment on a person, based on their birth year, sometimes so subtly that one may not be aware of them. (See Birth year Trigrams) The Eight Mansion school studies the effects on the house or building rather than the person. It is said that "the house always wins", being much larger in size the influences on a house has a bigger effect on it's occupants.
The studies of Xuan Gong Fei Xing (Flying Stars) see (Feng Shui Report) for an introduction to the Flying Star system), the I-Ching Xuan Gong Da Gua system and the various water formulas (more than 20) are additional "layers" that must be considered when doing a complete Feng Shui analysis.
The complexity of Feng Shui requires the understanding of all the various levels of Feng Shui to get an accurate understanding of a location and it's influence on the inhabitants.
The practice of Feng Shui is in a lot of ways like the practice of medicine. It is practice, utilizing many different aspects of study, where experience is the key and a through understanding of all the various influences involved must be taken into consideration.
